Obama – Progress

Obama - Progress Some of you may have come across this image already. It was designed by Shepard Fairey for the Barack Obama campaign. Shepard is a designer who is well known for his Obey campaign. I really like his style. It’s clean, crisp, and very striking. I actually had not seen this image before this morning. I found it over on Scott Hansen’s blog where he posted it and did a write-up on how he too was contracted by the Obama campaign to develop a poster. He accepted, just finished up the print and hopes to post up an image of it as soon as it’s printed and released. If you are unfamiliar with Scott’s work, it’s some of the best I know of and definitely inspiring to me. I can’t wait to see what he’s produced.

I find it amazing that a presidential candidate like Obama is engaging with the artist community and contracting some of it’s members to produce posters for his campaign. I think it’s a great move by the Obama campaign and definitely provides a fresh way of generating buzz and popularity.

Nikon D40

I’ve been researching a new DSLR for several weeks now and I finally decided on the Nikon D40. For awhile I’ve been wanting to get back into photography and start learning more about that medium. I’m not that accomplished, pretty much the only training I’ve had is one B&W photography class and a short time spent as a photographer for an event photography company while attending Baylor, but I’ve always enjoyed the process of taking photos. Nikon D40 It took me while to decide on the D40. At first I was going to get the Canon Rebel XTi, but after talking to several of my friends who have Nikons and holding both cameras in my hand, I decided to join the Nikon family. It arrives tomorrow and I can’t wait to get my hands on it. One of the great things about working here in Austin is that I’m downtown everyday, so I plan on heading out during lunchtime to explore the city and take photos. I plan on posting up on my Flickr page much more often now as well as highlighting various shots on my blog from time to time. I have a lot to learn, but it should be a good time.

Kakslauttanen Hotel – Finland

Kakslauttanen Hotel This hotel looks amazing and totally something that I think would be fun to experience. It’s like a futuristic igloo community; something straight out of a Kubrick film.

Alphabet City

Alphabet City Over on Jason Santa Maria’s blog I saw that he recently went on a typography walking tour throughout Manhattan with Tobias Frere-Jones from Hoefler & Frere-Jones. To have the opportunity to go on something like this must have been awesome. Apparently the tour was inspired from all of the research that Tobias did when creating one of my favorite fonts, Gotham. I’m a sucker for classic typography styles and it’s amazing to hear about how this font is so deeply rooted in the history of such a classic city as New York City.

Fresh Start

Last year I started a blog and have really enjoyed the entire experience, but in the past couple of months I’ve wanted to start over with a more personal site. I started off my first blog not knowing really where it would go, but after a few months into it I realized that I was just posting too much random stuff and I really wanted to give my site more structure and focus. This new site is my attempt at that.

So what can you expect to find on this new site? Mostly I want to focus on design work, both mine as well as from other designers I admire and other random findings that I come across. I’m sure I’ll be posting about things that inspire me that are not just limited to graphic design. I also intend on using this as a means to highlight my new love for photography, so be looking for posts related to that too.

That’s the goal, so we’ll see how it goes. I’m excited about it.
