2 Billion App Downloads: What Can We Learn?

“Sometimes we, at Odopod, are called upon to do something fast, as fast as possible to achieve a burning near-term objective. This is a reality and we’re happy to work within that constraint. However, short-term action isn’t a substitute for 1) thinking about your assets and values and 2) projecting those assets and values into the future.

2 Billion apps was made possible by just this sort of longer-term thinking.”

A fantastic point from a great article on Apple’s recent milestone of “2 Billion App Downloads” on their App Store by the folks at Odopod.

Wedding Invitation

wedding_invite

Really liking this wedding invitation! Not only is the design fantastic and well constructed but incorporating the backstory into the invite is a very creative idea. The only part that bugs me is the “SHE asked out HIM.” part which reads weird to me. I keep wanting to read it as “She asked him out.” Anyone else reading it like that or is it just me?

Matt has more of his work here.

Travel Time Lapse Winter ‘09

Beautifully filmed and edited video shot entirely on a Canon 5D MK II. The music is a great addition to these shots, Brad definitely knows what he’s doing. I particularly enjoyed the shot of the boats in the harbor where you can see the sea level rising. It’s those little details like that which get lost unless you view them via time lapse photography. It’s also amazing to see what the 5D MK II can do. It doesn’t help that I’m on the other side shooting Nikon. (via @blankenship)

Longbrake Print for Sale

longbrake_print

Joshua Longbrake has this photo for sale on his site as a 12 x 12 archival pigment inks matte finish print. It was taken during his trip to Thailand this summer. I love the isolation of the island in this shot. Wonderfully composed and the contrast of the island against the sky and water is lovely.

Tintin iPhone Wallpapers

iphone_wallpapers_tintin

Over the weekend I scanned in the covers of my Tintin comic book collection for a project we’re doing in our house. As I was working on them I realized that they would make awesome iPhone wallpapers, so I sized them down and packaged them up in a zip file for everyone to enjoy. I don’t have all of the comics, so there are a few covers missing. I did make a grid layout of 16 covers which is included in the folder.

A couple of notes. I obviously don’t hold the copyrights to these covers so I haven’t added them to my iPhone wallpapers collection. I also noticed that the last wallpapers I created where at a slightly different screen size and resolution than the native specs of the iPhone (320 x 480 @ 163 ppi), so these new ones are at the correct specs. The difference is noticeable, mostly in clarity, so I hope to re-save my other wallpapers when I get a chance.

I’m very excited for the Tintin movie which is being directed by Steven Spielberg and currently in post-production. I severely hope the films line-up well with Hergé’s classic Ligne claire style. I know I’ve written about Tintin before, but allow me to encourage you again to pick up a couple of books and discover his stories and adventures if you haven’t yet. I’m can’t wait to share these with Ethan once he’s old enough.

This Little Thing I Like To Do

Not sure when I started doing this, but I’ve developed somewhat of a reputation with putting someone’s face on another person’s body. I think it goes back to the time a friend of mine asked me to put his boss’ face on the body of Austin Powers. Then I can remember the time I took the faces of the staff of Crossbridge Church and put them on the members of the A-Team, which we then had printed on a cake. That one was epic.

During my time here at Springbox I’ve done a few, mostly at the expense of my coworkers, one at the expense of the company owners (which is by far my favorite, but for job security reasons I’ll refrain from posting it unless I get permission). Here is an example of none other than W with my friend Carlos’ face.

Here are the photos separated out so you can do a comparison.
