My Desktop Wallpaper & Minimal Mac

woodenpanels_desktop

After my desktop was featured last week on Minimal Mac’s Desktop Day I received a couple of requests for the wallpaper image I use, so I’ve packaged it up and am offering it to those of you who want it. The zip file contains several sizes.

If you haven’t been to the fantastic Minimal Mac site yet then I highly recommend checking it out. The site has only been out since July but is quickly becoming a popular destination for all things Mac + Simplicity. I’ll admit that I’m a horrible manager of the “things” in my life and constantly fight the clutter I create both digitally and physically. MM has been an inspiration for my digital, packrat tendencies and I’m working on being more structured with my content and getting by with less so I can minimize distractions and be more efficient.

Fusion Network

fusion_ads1

I have officially joined the Fusion Ad network. I’ve been familiar with Fusion for several months as a high majority of the sites featured on the network are ones I read, enjoy, and subscribe to. There are a couple of key reasons as to why I believe in what Fusion is doing:

1. Extremely focused ads. The advertisers on the Fusion network feature products and services that cater mainly to the creative and productivity audience. You won’t see ads for botox or viagra here. You will see ads for simple online storage, task management, and asset management. The products and services offered through the Fusion network are mostly ones I’ve used, use, or might use which is why I decided to accept the invitation to join. I have no interest in promoting things that are of no value to me or don’t relate to what I write about.

2. One ad at a time. This is one of the main contributors to Fusion’s success. While this is highly valuable to the advertisers, it’s very important to me as it doesn’t junk up the page or turn my site into the billboard-strewn sidelines of a freeway.

3. Well designed and static. This is a no brainer for me. In fact, had Fusion’s ads been twice their size, animated, and just down-right ugly I would have turned down the invite regardless of whether or not I liked the products. But again this is just another example of what sets Fusion apart from more mainstream ad networks.

I’m honored to be a part of this network and among the other highly respectable members of writers, creators, and thinkers.

Diana Instant Back

diana_instantback

For all you owners of a Diana+ you might want to check out the Diana Instant Back+ which gives you the ability to make a print in a matter of seconds. It’s compatible with Fuji Instax Mini Film and provides a nice substitution for the hole being left by the absense of Polaroid.

RSS Feed Fixed

The RSS feed problem I’ve been having since launching my redesign has been fixed, so all of you who were subscribed to the previous feed will start receiving the new posts. Sorry for the mix-up and big thanks to Ryan for helping me get this resolved.

Site Redesign

Just launched a full redesign of my site. I’ve been wanting to redo my site for awhile, basically taking it beyond just a blog. The two biggest additions to the site are the inclusion of my work portfolio and highlights from my photography. The process of doing the redesign was a journey and something I’ll write about in another post.

There might be some kinks that I’m sure will come up over the coming days. If you see anything weird, let me know. I’d also love to hear your thoughts in general, good and bad.

Update: Permalinks are fixed and now reroute to the new link structure.

John Nack on Managing Complex PSDs

John Nack is the Principal Product manager for Adobe Photoshop and runs a fantastic blog devoted to all things related to Photoshop and Adobe in general. He recently wrote a post asking for feedback on how to manage complex PSDs, specifically in regards to better ways of controlling layers.

There is a lot to read through in that post, but one thing that stood out to me is how John goes back through the comments and adds his replies directly into the comments left by his readers. This is a fantastic way of managing the mini-conversations that happen in the comments section and keeps those conversations from being disjointed. I offered my feedback a few days ago and it’s great to go back and see his reply, especially in that one of my requests is already implimented in CS4 and the other is in the works.

Happy New Year

Yes I’m still alive and enjoying the first day of 2009. I haven’t had a chance to write anything over the holidays as we’ve been out of town or just busy in general, but next week things get back to normal so I’ll be writing more then.

I hope you all had a enjoyable Christmas and New Years.
