Working with a fantastic group of UX Designers, Engineers, Producers, QA and Audio team members I led the Visual Design and UI Art implementation of a new Battle Pass UI which debuted in Dec 2022 with Fortnite Chapter 4.

A New Foundation

The template included dual reward tracks, an upgrade path, and chase reward for completing specific event quests. Everything had to be themeable to align with different IP collaborations tied to seasonal beats.

Key Art

The central key art is the hero of the theme. I built materials in Unreal to "rez in" the key characters of the event. The instances had a single parameter that drove the wipe effect. Additionally I anchored the characters with a planet. Since these are UI materials everything is 2D, so I simulated the planet rotation by distorting the UVs in the material graph.

Dynamic UI Swap

During this Star Wars event, Order 66 is issued by the Emperor during gameplay and the Clone Trooper NPCs become hostile. I designed an update the Event Screen to reflect this change. Red sweeps through the UI and "Order 66" is written in Aurebesh at the bottom as a little easter egg.

Icons

Each mid-season event comes with a custom nav icon. I did several iterations and landed on one that feels connected to the greater Star Wars universe. I also designed the Holocron icon, which players earn via in-game quests to unlock the Darth Mauls' Infiltrator glider.
